THE BOYS FROM THE BAY

By Pat Flanagan

The Bay of Plenty, a now almost redundant break just north of North Beach, was once the centre of the universe of Durban and some respects, South African surfing.

In a time when life seemed simpler, days were longer, waves where better and more frequent, the Bay of Plenty not only played host to The Gunston 500, the biggest annual surf event ever staged in South Africa but also nurtured some of the greatest surfers of all time. Shaun and Michael Tomson, Martin Potter, Paul Naude, Bruce Jackson, Mike Larmont, Wayne Shaw, Kevin Todd and later Mike Burness and the Lawson brothers all called the Bay their home break.

The full story of the Bay and its people - what went on before and whats happen since - will roll out over the next year with a series of articles and pictures and maybe more. Watch this space.
